Prime Minister Narendra Modi and visiting Myanmar President U Min Aung Hlaing held detailed talks on Monday the First of June 2026 in the National Capital on the entire gamut of bilateral issues, which covered trade and economic ties, defence and security related issues, border management, development assistance, cultural exchanges as well as regional situation.

Briefing media after the talks between the leaders, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said both sides expressed an interest in forging closer cooperation, particularly in the areas of trade and investment, development cooperation, health, education, and energy.

He said both sides underlined the importance of connectivity for people-to-people contacts and agreed to work as quickly as possible towards completion of Kaladan Multi Modal Transit Transport project.

The Foreign Secretary said the Prime Minister reaffirmed India’s support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Myanmar and both sides underscored the importance of preventing the misuse of territory for activities inimical to their security interests.

The Foreign Secretary said the President of Myanmar reiterated the assurance that Myanmar’s territory will not be permitted to be used against India’s security interest.

He added that Myanmar is an important country and a neighbour with who India shares a border of 1643 kilometres. It sits at the confluence of India’s Neighbourhood First, Act East as well as MAHASAGAR and Indo Pacific policies. Bilateral trade between India and Myanmar stands at over 2 billion dollars.
On enhancing economic cooperation in critical minerals and rare earths, the Foreign Secretary said issues related to critical minerals and rare earths did come up during the discussions today.

He said there was an understanding that the two governments and the entities from the two countries would continue to keep in touch on these issues and take forward cooperation in these areas.

Replying to another query, the Foreign Secretary said Prime Minister Modi did raise the matter of former State Counsellor of Myanmar Aung San Suu Kyi and the discussion was in the context of the peace process which has been underway in Myanmar for quite some time.

He underlined that India’s engagement with Myanmar is not intended to be a commentary on the internal political arrangements in that country. He said India has always put forward on its thoughts on issues related to democracy, the peace process, inclusion and to the importance of having all stakeholders as part of the dialogue at the table.

President Droupadi Murmu today received Myanmar President U Min Aung Hlaing at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

In a social media message the President said that the shared Buddhist heritage and centuries-old people-to-people bonds lend a unique warmth to India-Myanmar relations.

The President Murmu said that Myanmar is India’s gateway to Southeast Asia. She also conveyed India’s steadfast support for Myanmar’s pursuit of peace and reconciliation.
