Sun was shining brightly on Tuesday the 20th of January 2026 at the headquarters of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) when Nitin Nabin formally took over its youngest ever president.

Nitin Nabin was also born the same year when the BJP was formed, 1980.

After the formal announcement of the new chief, the Prime Minister Narendra Modi was the first to greet him in presence of J P Nadda, the outgoing BJP President, Amit Shan, Rajnath Singh and Nitin Gadkari.

Nabin is the 12th national president of the BJP.

It may be recalled that the Nabin had resigned as the minister for law and justice, urban development and housing in the Bihar government after he was appointed working president of the BJP on 14th of December 2025.

“Today is a very historic occasion, when our young, energetic, and talented Nitin Nabin is taking charge as the National President of the world’s largest political party, the BJP. I extend my heartfelt congratulations to him on my behalf and on behalf of crores of workers,” said the outgoing BJP president and Union Health Minister J P Nadda.

The election followed an extensive internal process that began at the grassroots and moved to the national level. The national president poll was held after 30 of the 36 state BJP units elected their presidents, fulfilling the requirement for the party’s electoral college. Nitin Nabin was appointed national working president on December 14, 2025, signalling the high command’s choice for the top position.

Nabin’s elevation is seen as a generational shift, with the party emphasizing organizational strength ahead of key state elections this year and next, including in Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Assam, and Uttar Pradesh, as well as the 2029 general elections.

Hailing from Bihar, Nitin comes from a political family; his father, Nabin Kishore Prasad Sinha, was a multi-term BJP MLA.

Nitin Nabin entered politics in 2006, contesting a bypoll following his father’s passing, and has remained unbeaten since, first representing Patna West and later Bankipur.

The brief history profile of Nitin Nabin says that he has held ministerial positions in Bihar, including Roads Minister (2021–22) and Minister for Urban Development, Housing, and Law and Justice (2024–25).

Previously, he held key positions in the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha at both state and national levels and was credited with strengthening the party’s presence in states like Chhattisgarh and Sikkim.
