Mojtaba Ali Khamenei is the second oldest son of the slain Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. He is now appointed as the new Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Late in Sunday night, local time in Tehran on 8th of March 2026, the Assembly of Experts formally named Ayatollah Sayyed Mojtaba Khamenei as their country’s new spiritual leader. He has now replaced his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed in his official residence in Tehran during the initial bombing strike by US and Israel.

Media reports emanating from the region suggests that Iran’s Assembly of Experts have asked all citizens to maintain unity and pledge support to Mojtaba Khamenei as the Supreme Leader.

Mojtaba Ali Khamenei is widely known as a person who is a stricter hard-liner than his slain father. In the past he had represented the then Supreme Leader in an official capacity despite never being elected or appointed to a government position.

Mojtaba Khamenei had skillfully managed and worked closely with the commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps-Qods Force (IRGC-QF) and also the Basij Resistance Force (Basij) to advance his father’s administrative control over Iran.
