Proceedings in the Lok Sabha touched a new low on Tuesday the 10th of February 2026 when Congress led opposition formally submitted a notice to remove Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla from office.

The Lok Sabha secretariat confirmed that Congress MP party’s chief whip K Suresh has submitted a petition signed by Samajwadi Party and DMK parties for a ‘no confidence motion’ against the Speaker.

The move comes-in amidst acrimonious scenes witnessed in the lower house provoked by sequences when Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi was not allowed to finish his speech during the Vote of Thanks on the President’s Address.

It may be recalled that Gandhi wanted to raise certain comments allegedly made by former chief of army written in a yet to be published memoirs.

The decision by the Opposition to move a no confidence motion against Lok Sabha Speaker is a rare occurrence.

Speaker Om Birla has now recused himself from the proceedings of the House

Congress Dy Leader in Lok Sabha, Tarun Gogoi said “at 1:14 pm today, we submitted a motion for a no-confidence motion against the Speaker under rule 94C rules and procedures.”

It is learnt that 118 Opposition MPs have signed the notice.

According to reliable sources, the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, did not sign the notice of no-confidence motion, as Congress party says it is not proper for the LoP to sign a petition for the removal of the Speaker in a parliamentary democracy.
