President Droupadi Murmu embarked on an Indian Navy’s indigenous Kalvari class submarine INS Vaghsheer at Karwar Naval Base, Karnataka.

According to the Navy’s spokesperson, Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi was with President Murmu when she took her maiden sortie onboard a Kalvari Class Submarine on Sunday the 28th of December 2025.

The operational sortie was for over two-hour in INS Vaghsheer considered to be one of the most efficient and silent submarines of its class. It was inducted into the Indian Navy earlier this year.

It may be recalled that it was former President Dr APJ Abdul Kalam who the first head of the state who undertook a similar sortie in February 2006 on board INS Sindhu Rakshak.

In November last year, the President witnessed an operational demonstration by the Indian Navy onboard the indigenous aircraft carrier INS Vikrant.

A word about INS Vaghsheer – it is the sixth and final submarine of the P75 Scorpene project, was commissioned into the Navy earlier this year in the month of  January 2025.

Naval experts believe that Vaghsheer is one of the most silent and versatile diesel-electric submarines in the world.

It is designed to undertake a wide range of missions, including anti-surface warfare, anti-submarine warfare, intelligence gathering, area surveillance, and special operations.

Armed with wire-guided torpedoes, anti-ship missiles and advanced sonar systems, INS Vaghsheer also features modular construction, allowing for future upgrades such as the integration of Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) technology.
