Both the Houses in Parliament resumed discussions on the Union Budget on Wednesday the 11th of February 20926.
Blaming the government of having allegedly “sold Mother India” under undue pressure from America, the Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi took special pot-shots at the ruling BJP-led government.
Gandhi’s blistering political attack provoked sharp protests from the Treasury benches led by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju.
Rahul Gandhi alleged that the Union Government Centre had agreed with the United States for a one-sided trade agreement while compromising country’s strategic interests, particularly in the digital and agricultural sectors.
“Our data has been sold. Our farmers have been sold,” Gandhi declared, his remarks drawing loud objections from BJP members. “If India refused to comply, tariffs would be raised again. Is this how a sovereign nation negotiates?”
The Congress leader gave his vision and approach to the India-US trade deal stating that if INDIA bloc been negotiating the deal. “We would tell President Trump: the most important thing in this equation is Indian data. You want to save your dollar? We are your friends. But if you want access to this data, you will speak to us as equals. You will not speak to us as if we are your servants.”
Gandhi added that energy security and farmers’ interests would have been non-negotiable. “We understand you have an agricultural voter base. We understand you need to protect your farmers. But we will also protect our farmers,” he said.
In one of his sharpest remarks, Gandhi said, “We will not be treated like Pakistan. If President Trump decides to have the Pakistan Army Chief have breakfast with him, we will have something to say about it.”
The Parliament Affairs Minister Kien Rijiju was quick in his response to the LoP’s charges stating that “no one has ever been born who would sell this country,” Rijiju said. “What you say doesn’t matter. Congress always wants to weaken the country.”
Rijiju accused the Opposition of attempting to derail India’s economic growth narrative and undermine investor confidence.
Earlier one of the firsts speakers of the day who participated in the discussion of Arun Bharti of LJP (R), aa constituent of the ruling NDA.
He described the Union Budget as a statement for the nation’s development and termed it as a visionary saying it will lay the foundation of achieving the goal of a developed India by 2047.
Arun Bharti said the Union Government has given priority to Bihar, stating that financial assistance to the state, which stood at around three lakh crore rupees between 2004 and 2014, has been increased threefold to nine lakh crore rupees during 2014 to 2024.
Indra Hang Subba of Sikkim Krantikari Morcha said that this year’s Budget has served interest of all sections of the society leading the nation on the path of self-reliance.
The MP from the hill state of Sikkim added that the provision made for industry-led research in the Budget is a welcome step.
One of the strong voices from the Opposition was from Dr Raj Kumar Chabbewal of AAP who alleged that there is nothing concrete in the Union Budget for the people of the country.
The AAP MP was bitter and critical regarding the allocations for the National Health Mission which according to him have been reduced in the annual Budget of 2026-27.
Sudheer Gupta of BJP hailed the Union Budget saying that it will fulfil the vision of making India a developed nation by 2047. He said that during the UPA rule the size of the Union Budget was 16 lakh crore rupees in 2013-14 while in the NDA regime it has crossed 53 lakh crore rupees in 2026-27.
He said, the capital expenditure which was only two lakh crore rupees has touched 12 lakh crore rupees during the present dispensation.
In the Defence sector, budgetary provisions of 6 lakh 80 thousand crore rupees have been made while it was two lakh crore rupees during the UPA regime.
Anurag Singh Thakur of BJP said, this Budget boosts the poor with welfare, women with strength, farmers with progress and youth with opportunities.
The Rajya Sabha has also resumed the discussion on the Union Budget 2026-27.
Haris Beeran of IUML alleged that the Budget does not offer anything for farmers and fishermen. He also alleged that Kerala has been ignored in the Budget. He sought clarity about the rare earth project in Kerala.
Ashok Chavan of BJP said, the budget is centred on the youth, strengthens women, farmers, entrepreneurs, poor, underprivileged and all sections of society. He said, this is a budget for the entire country.
Former Prime Minister and JD(S) leader H D Devegowda said, India has the talent, the enterprise and ambition to lead the world. He hoped that this budget would be remembered not only for the numbers but for the wisdom for building an economy that is strong today and will ensure a stronger tomorrow.
