In the coming days Amaravati will be declared the capital of Adhra Pradesh.
On Wednesday the First of April 2026, the Lok Sabha passed the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2026, which seeks to amend the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014.
With the passing of this key legislation in Lok Sabha, Amaravati now gets a formal approval of the status of the sole capital of Andhra Pradesh.
The bill was approved after a brief discussion and passed through a voice vote.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah, in his Statement of Object and Reasons for the bill, said the 2014 Act initially designated Hyderabad as a common capital for Telangana and Andhra Pradesh for up to ten years.
“Subsequent to enactment of the said Act, the Government of Andhra Pradesh, after due consideration, consultation, and planning, identified and notified Amaravati as the new capital of that State,” he said.
Highlighting the efforts already undertaken to establish Amaravati as the administrative and legislative hub, Shah noted that significant infrastructural and policy measures had been implemented to support its development.
He added that the Legislative Assembly of Andhra Pradesh had passed a resolution on March 28, 2026, urging the union government to amend the 2014 Act to officially recognize Amaravati as the new capital.
“The bill seeks to give effect to the Resolution of the Legislative Assembly of Andhra Pradesh and to provide statutory clarity regarding the capital of the State of Andhra Pradesh,” Shah said, adding that the amendment will formally declare Amaravati as the capital with effect from June 2, 2024.
The amendment is expected to provide legal certainty and support ongoing developmental initiatives in Amaravati, which had been functioning as the de facto capital since its designation by the state government following the bifurcation of the erstwhile Andhra Pradesh in 2014.
