US ambassador-designate to India Sergio Gor said that India and the U.S. are actively engaged for the ongoing trade deal negotiations.
On Monday the 12th of January 2026, the new US ambassador assumed office in New Delhi. Soon he is expected to present his formal credentials to President Droupadi Murmu.
Sergio Gor asserted that Trump’s friendship with Prime Minister Narendra Modi is “real” and said that real friends can resolve their differences.
Gor, who is also Special Envoy to South and Central Asia at the US Embassy, also said that US President Donald Trump could visit India by next year.
Sergio Gor said the trade is very important for the relationship between the two nations and hopes the talks for a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) to complete soon in the near future.
“The United States and India are bound, not just by shared interests but by a relationship anchored at the highest levels. Real friends can disagree but always resolve their differences in the end,” he said in his arrival speech.
“India is the world’s largest nation. So it’s not an easy task to get this across the finish line, but we are determined to get there,” he added.
He noted that while trade is very important for New Delhi and Washington’s relationship, both nations also continue to work closely together on other very important areas such as security, counter-terrorism, energy, technology, education, and health.
“I have travelled all over the world with President Trump, and I can attest that his friendship with Prime Minister Modi is real.”
He said India and the US will continue to work together in important areas such as security, counter-terrorism and energy. Mr Gor said that no partner is more essential than India.
Sergio Gor said that the United States launched a new initiative last month called Pax Silicon.
It is a US-led strategic effort to build a secure, prosperous and innovation-driven silicon supply chain, from critical minerals and energy inputs to advanced manufacturing, semiconductors, research and logistics.
Nations, including Japan, South Korea, the United Kingdom, and Israel, have already joined the Pax Silicon initiative.
Sergio Gor announced that India will be invited to join this group as a full member next month.
He said, as the world adopts new technologies, it is essential that India and the United States work hand in hand from the very start.
